Navratri in Ujjain 2026: Harsiddhi Mata, Dates and Darshan Plan

Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October and ends on 19 October, with Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on Tuesday, 20 October. In Ujjain, the Navratri days centre on the Devi temples, above all Harsiddhi Mata, a Shakti Peetha where the evening lamp towers are lit. Mahakaleshwar darshan carries on as usual, so most families combine the two.
We are writing this on 10 October, with the festival a day away, for the family that is already on its way or is thinking of a last-minute trip. We have hosted pilgrim families in Ujjain since 2023, and a little planning makes the nine days gentler for your parents and children.
Navratri 2026 dates at a glance
According to the Hindu Tone Navratri 2026 guide, Ghatasthapana (the installation of the sacred pot that begins the festival) falls on Sunday, 11 October 2026. The nine nights end on 19 October, and Vijayadashami follows on Tuesday, 20 October. Gulf News gives the same window.
Sources differ on the exact Ghatasthapana muhurat, so we will not quote one. Your family pandit ji or the temple you visit will give the right time for your city. The same goes for Ashtami and Navami: temples announce their own havan and pooja days and times locally.
What this means for your plan
- 11 October: the first day, and usually the day the Devi temples see the first big wave of devotees.
- Final days: Ashtami and Navami, traditionally the days of special havan and pooja at Devi temples (ask the temple for exact dates).
- 20 October: Vijayadashami, when many families end their fast.
Harsiddhi Mata Temple: the heart of Navratri in Ujjain
Harsiddhi is one of the oldest temples in Ujjain. MP Tourism notes that the Shiva Purana mentions it as a Shakti Peetha, the place where the elbow of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. Popular legend also links it to King Vikramaditya, though that is tradition, not documented history.
The temple has two tall lamp towers holding 726 lamp holders, and MP Tourism says they are lit during Navratri, so the whole compound glows after dark. It also describes the temple as especially busy then, with hundreds of earthen diyas burning.
Timings: please check on the day
MP Tourism lists the temple as open daily from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with the morning aarti from 7:00 to 8:00 AM and the evening aarti at 7:00 PM. Other guides give a later closing time, and festival days change the routine. In a past year, the Free Press Journal reported a Navratri schedule of Ghat Sthapana at 7:30 AM, aarti at 9 AM and 7 PM, and no Shayan Aarti during the nine days. That report is from 2023, so treat it as a guide to the pattern, not as this year's timetable.
The same report mentions that, at Harsiddhi, advance booking was needed for the deepmalika (lamp lighting). If lighting a lamp is part of your family's vow, ask the temple office about it on your first day, not on Ashtami.
Other Devi temples families visit
The same 2023 report describes Navratri arrangements at several other Devi temples in Ujjain: Chaubis Khamba Mata, Chausath Yogini Mata, Bijasan Mata and Santoshi Mata. Each keeps its own ghat sthapana time and aarti hours, with akhand jyot (a lamp kept burning through the nine days) and daily recitation of Durga Saptashati at several of them.
Our advice is simple. Choose one or two temples, not all five. A calm darshan with your parents is worth more than a long list. Our travel page explains local cabs and tempo traveller options if you want a driver for a half-day temple tour.
Combining Navratri with Mahakal darshan
Mahakaleshwar is a Shiva temple, but almost every family who comes to Ujjain wants both. The Bhasma Aarti is held in the early morning, around 4 AM; book it and check the current timing on the official Shri Mahakaleshwar temple portal. Our complete Mahakaleshwar guide explains booking, dress code and what to carry. Remember the permit is booked by you through the temple's own channels, and the festival week will be busier than usual.
A calm daily rhythm
- Early morning: Mahakal darshan.
- Midday: rest at the villa. Elders especially need this after a morning in a queue.
- Late afternoon: a Devi temple such as Harsiddhi, timed so you reach before the evening aarti.
- Evening: a light satvik dinner cooked at home, and an early night.
If your family is fasting, a kitchen helps a great deal. For a wider look at the city beyond these temples, our guide to ten sacred places in Ujjain beyond Mahakaleshwar is a good companion read.
Crowds, comfort and practical tips
Festival days bring larger crowds, and we will not pretend to know the numbers. The 2023 report mentioned around 180 public pandals applying for permission in the city, which gives a sense that the whole town celebrates. Allow extra travel time in the evenings, when the city is busiest. Our history of Ujjain is a nice read for children while you wait for the next outing.
- Start early, carry water, and keep footwear easy to remove.
- Keep small cash for prasad and offerings.
- If you are booking the Bhasma Aarti, carry the original photo ID used at registration for each person, as asked on the official Shri Mahakaleshwar temple portal.
- Choose a stay close to the temple, so the family can return and rest between visits.
- If your parents find long queues hard, plan one darshan a day, not three.
