Omkareshwar: The Other Jyotirlinga, Just 78 Kilometres Away
Many of our guests come to Ujjain for one reason: to stand before Mahakaleshwar. They book three nights, complete their darshan, and leave with a sense of deep fulfilment. We could not be more honoured to host them.
And yet — quietly, gently — we always tell them about Omkareshwar. Just 78 kilometres south of Ujjain, on a sacred island shaped like the syllable OM, sits the second of Madhya Pradesh's two Jyotirlingas. To visit one without the other is to leave a journey unfinished.
This guide is for the family that has time for one extra day. We promise it will be worth it.
Where & What is Omkareshwar?
Omkareshwar (also spelled Omkareshwara) is a small island in the Narmada river, located in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. The island, viewed from above, is shaped exactly like the Sanskrit syllable ॐ (OM) — a geographic coincidence that ancient pilgrims took as divine confirmation.
Two Jyotirlingas reside here, one on the north bank and one on the island itself:
- Omkareshwar Mandir — on the OM-shaped island, considered the primary Jyotirlinga
- Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) Mandir — on the south bank, also considered part of the same Jyotirlinga complex
Tradition holds that a complete pilgrimage requires visiting both shrines, completing the parikrama (circumambulation) of the island, and bathing in the sacred Narmada.
Why Mahakaleshwar Pilgrims Should Visit Omkareshwar
- The two Madhya Pradesh Jyotirlingas are best visited together. Many pilgrims travel from across India, complete Mahakaleshwar darshan, and return home unaware that the second Jyotirlinga is just two hours away.
- Different energies, different stories. Mahakaleshwar carries the fierce, time-mastering energy of Mahakal. Omkareshwar carries the calmer, almost playful energy of OM itself — the seed sound of all creation. The contrast is what makes the journey complete.
- The Narmada river. One of the seven sacred rivers of India, the Narmada is considered older than the Ganga. A bath in her waters is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual moment for many pilgrims.
- The natural beauty. Omkareshwar is genuinely stunning — the green island, the wide river, the temple silhouette at sunset. After three or four days in Ujjain's old city density, the openness here is restorative.
How to Plan the Day Trip
The Route
Ujjain to Omkareshwar is approximately 78 kilometres via Indore (NH 27 / MP State Highway). The drive takes 2 hours each way, depending on traffic. The roads are well-maintained throughout.
Best Departure Time
Leave Ujjain by 6:30 AM at the latest. This puts you at Omkareshwar by 8:30 AM — ahead of the day-tripper crowds, with cool morning air and softer temple energy.
Cost
We arrange a comfortable round-trip with a vetted driver for ₹5,500, inclusive of waiting time at the temple (typically 4-5 hours on the island). Sedan or SUV based on family size.
Suggested Schedule
- 6:30 AM — Departure from villa with packed breakfast and water
- 8:30 AM — Arrival at Omkareshwar, parking, walk to ferry
- 9:00-11:00 AM — Omkareshwar darshan + temple tour
- 11:00-12:30 PM — Mamleshwar darshan, parikrama (if energy permits)
- 12:30-1:30 PM — Lunch at a clean Narmada-side restaurant (we recommend a few)
- 1:30-2:30 PM — Optional: Bath / dip in the Narmada
- 2:30 PM — Departure
- 4:30 PM — Back at villa for tea
What to Carry
- Government photo ID for adults
- Modest, light cotton clothing (it gets hot mid-day)
- A change of clothes if you plan to bathe in the Narmada
- Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
- Your own water bottle and small snacks
- Cash for ferry tickets, offerings, and parking
The Sacred Parikrama
The complete parikrama (circumambulation) of the Omkareshwar island is approximately 7 kilometres on foot. For elderly travellers or families with young children, this can be challenging. Three options:
- Full parikrama (most devout): 2.5 to 3 hours of walking, partially on stone steps, partially flat. Wear good walking shoes.
- Partial parikrama: Visit just the main temple and Mamleshwar; skip the full circle. About 90 minutes.
- Boat parikrama: Available from the ferry ghat for ₹100-200/person; takes 30 minutes. Beautiful, especially at golden hour.
A Quiet Reflection
Pilgrimage in India has always been about journey, not just destination. The road from Ujjain to Omkareshwar passes through fields, small towns, and stretches of unhurried countryside. Many of our guests tell us afterwards that the drive itself — windows down, family in the car, quiet time together — was the most memorable part of the day.
Omkareshwar offers what Ujjain sometimes cannot — space, river, and a slower pace. Mahakaleshwar gives you the intensity of the eternal one; Omkareshwar gives you the breath afterwards.
Our caretakers can arrange the entire day for your family. Just send a WhatsApp the evening before, and we will have the car, breakfast, and driver ready at the gate by sunrise.
May your journey be blessed.
